阿彌陀佛四十八大願
Amitabha Buddha’s Forty-Eight Great Vows

第一國無惡趣願：設我得佛，國有地獄、餓鬼、畜生者，不取正覺。
The First Vow: There are no evil paths in my realm. I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi if there were hells, hungry ghosts, and animals in my realm.

第二不墮惡趣願：設我得佛，國中人天壽終之後復更三惡道者，不取正覺。
The Second Vow: No one will fall into the evil paths. If I attained Buddhahood and the humans and heavenly beings in my realm fell into the Three Paths after they terminated their life, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第三皆得金身願：設我得佛，國中人天不悉真金色者，不取正覺。
The Third Vow: All will gain golden bodies. If I attained Buddhahood, but not everyone in my realm gained a golden body, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第四無有美醜願：設我得佛，國中人天形色不同有好醜者，不取正覺。
The Fourth Vow: There are neither beautiful nor ugly beings. If I attained Buddhahood, and there were both beautiful and ugly beings in my realm, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第五得宿命通願：設我得佛，國中人天不悉識宿命，下至知百千億那由他諸劫事者，不取正覺。
The Fifth Vow: All will know their past lives. If I attained Buddhahood, and the beings in my realm were unable to know their past lives or to know the hundreds of billions of nayutas of events, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第六得天眼通願：設我得佛，國中人天不得天眼，下至見百千億那由他諸佛國者，不取正覺。
The Sixth Vow: All will see through everything no matter how far away it is. If I attained Buddhahood, and the beings in my realm could not see through everything or even the hundreds of billions of nayutas of Buddha realms, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第七得天耳通願：設我得佛，國中人天不得天耳，下至聞百千億那由他諸佛所說不悉受持者，不取正覺。
The Seventh Vow: All will hear everything no matter how far away it is.
If I attained Buddhahood, and the beings in my realm could not hear sounds no matter how far away they were, or even hundreds of billions of nayutas of the Buddha’s lectures and could not abide by them, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第八得他心通願：設我得佛，國中人天不得見他心智，下至知百千億那由他諸佛國中眾生心念者，不取正覺。
The Eighth Vow: All will be able to read others’ minds. If I attained Buddhahood, and the beings in my realm could not read others’ minds, or even the thoughts of the sentient beings of hundreds of billions of nayutas, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第九得神足通願：設我得佛，國中人天不得神足於一念頃，下至不能超過百千億那由他諸佛國者，不取正覺。
The Ninth Vow: All will be able to fly to wherever they want to go with a flash of thought. If I attained Buddhahood, and the beings in my realm were unable to fly to wherever they wanted to go with a flash of thought, or even overpassed hundreds of billions of nayutas of Buddha lands, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第十無有我執願：設我得佛，國中人天若起想念貪計身者，不取正覺。
The Tenth Vow: All will have no self-adherence. If I attained Buddhahood, and the beings in my realm gave rise to greed for their own selves, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第十一決定成佛願：設我得佛，國中人天不住定聚必至滅度者，不取正覺。
The Eleventh Vow: All will resolve to be Buddhas. If I attained Buddhahood, and the beings in my realm did not abide in stability until they eliminated afflictions and were ferried over the sea of bitterness, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第十二光明無量願：設我得佛，光明有能限量，下至不照百千億那由他諸佛國者，不取正覺。
The Twelfth Vow: Light will be limitless.
If I attained Buddhahood, and the light was limited and could not shine on the hundreds of billions of nayutas of Buddha lands, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第十三佛壽無量願：設我得佛，壽命有能限量，下至百千億那由他劫者，不取正覺。
The Thirteenth Vow: The Buddha lifespan will be limitless.
If I attained Buddhahood, and the Buddha lifespan were limited or even less than hundreds of billions of nayutas of kalpas, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第十四聲聞無量願：設我得佛，國中聲聞有能計量，乃至三千大千世界眾生緣覺於百千劫，悉共計校，知其數者，不取正覺。
The Fourteenth Vow: There will be countless hearers. If I attained Buddhahood, and the number of the hearers in my realm could be counted or even the sentient beings and pratyeka buddhas in the Tri-sahasra-maha-sahasra-lokadhatu for hundreds of kalpas could be counted, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第十五有情壽命無量願：設我得佛，國中人天壽命無能限量，除其本願修短自在。若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Fifteenth Vow: All sentient beings will have boundless lifespans. If I attained Buddhahood, the beings in my realm would have boundless lifespans, unless their original vow was to have short and unrestrained lives. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第十六無不善名願：設我得佛，國中人天乃至聞有不善名者，不取正覺。
The Sixteenth Vow: There will be no bad names. If I attained Buddhahood, and the beings in my realm heard bad names, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第十七諸佛讚嘆願：設我得佛，十方世界無量諸佛不悉諮嗟(讚嘆)稱我名者，不取正覺。
The Seventeenth Vow: All Buddhas will praise me. If I attained Buddhahood, and the numerous Buddhas in the Ten Directions did not praise me, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第十八十念往生願：設我得佛，十方眾生至心信樂欲生我國，乃至十念，若不生者，不取正覺，唯除五逆、誹謗正法。
The Eighteenth Vow: All will reach the Pure Land if they repeat my name ten times before passing away. If I attained Buddhahood, and the sentient beings in the Ten Directions wholeheartedly desired to be reborn in my realm and repeated my name ten times but failed to go there, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi, unless they committed the five betrayals and slandered the right Dharma.

第十九臨終接引願：設我得佛，十方眾生發菩提心修諸功德，至心發願欲生我國，臨壽終時，假令不與大眾圍遶現其人前者，不取正覺。
The Nineteenth Vow: All will be led to the Pure Land before they die.
If I attained Buddhahood, and the sentient beings in the Ten Directions made up a Bodhi mind to cultivate all merits and virtues and wholeheartedly vowed to be born in my realm before they die, but I did not manifest in front of the dying person and the crowd around him, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第二十大悲攝受願：設我得佛，十方眾生聞我名號、繫念我國，植諸德本、至心迴向欲生我國，不果遂者，不取正覺。
The Twentieth Vow: I will accept all with compassion. If I attained Buddhahood, the sentient beings in the Ten Directions would hear my name, would be mindful of my realm, would plant the roots of virtues, and would wholeheartedly turn the virtues toward my realm in the hope of being born there. If they failed to do so, then I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第二十一具足妙相願：設我得佛，國中人天不悉成滿三十二大人相者，不取正覺。
The Twenty-first Vow: All will be replete with wondrous forms. If I attained Buddhahood, and the beings in my realm were not replete with the thirty-two bodhisattva forms, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第二十二一生補處願：設我得佛，他方佛土諸菩薩眾來生我國，究竟必至一生補處。除其本願自在所化，為眾生故，被弘誓鎧，積累德本度脫一切，遊諸佛國修菩薩行，供養十方諸佛如來。開化恒沙無量眾生，使立無上正真之道，超出常倫諸地之行，現前修習普賢之德。若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Twenty-second Vow: All will fill the vacancies of Buddhas. If I attained Buddhahood, and the Bodhisattvas from other Buddha realms came to my realm to be born, they would surely fill the vacancies of Buddhas. Except for their original desire to be freely born, I would make a great vow which is as firm as iron to accumulate my virtues, travel all over Buddha lands to cultivate the Bodhisattva Path, and make offerings to the Buddhas in the Ten Directions for the sake of all sentient beings. Also I would enlighten countless sentient beings and make them walk on the path of supreme reality, overpass the acts of those in the general lands, and cultivate the virtues of Samantabahdra. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第二十三供養諸佛願：設我得佛，國中菩薩承佛神力供養諸佛，一食之頃，不能遍至無量無數億那由他諸佛國者，不取正覺。
The Twenty-third Vow: I will make offerings to all Buddhas. If I attained Buddhahood, and the Bodhisattvas in my realm made offerings to the Buddhas with the spiritual power of the Buddhas, but they could not reach countless nayutas of Buddha lands, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第二十四供具如意願：設我得佛，國中菩薩在諸佛前現其德本，諸所求欲供養之具若不如意者，不取正覺。
The Twenty-fourth Vow: The utensils for offerings will be convenient as one wants. If I attained Buddhahood, and the Bodhisattvas in my realm manifested their virtue roots before the Buddhas, but the utensils for offerings were too inconvenient to use, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第二十五善說佛法願：設我得佛，國中菩薩不能演說一切智者，不取正覺。
The Twenty-fifth Vow: All will be good at lecturing on Buddhist Dharmas. If I attained Buddhahood, and the Bodhisattvas in my realm were unable to lecture on all kinds of wisdom, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第二十六得金剛身願：設我得佛，國中菩薩不得金剛那羅延身者，不取正覺。
The Twenty-sixth Vow: All will gain diamond bodies. If I attained Buddhahood, and the Bodhisattvas in my realm did not gain diamond Narayana bodies, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第二十七莊嚴無盡願：設我得佛，國中人天、一切萬物嚴淨光麗，形色殊特，窮微極妙，無能稱量。其諸眾生乃至逮得天眼，有能明了辨其名數者，不取正覺。
The Twenty-seventh Vow: The solemnity will be endless. If I attained Buddhahood, and the beings as well as everything in my realm were solemn, pure, glittering, and pretty with special and wondrous forms and were too numerous to count, but the sentient beings there gained the capability of seeing through everything, and the number of them was limited, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第二十八無量光樹願：設我得佛，國中菩薩乃至少功德者，不能知見其道場樹無量光色高四百萬里者，不取正覺。
The Twenty-eighth Vow: There will be trees of boundless light. If I attained Buddhahood, and the Bodhisattvas in my realm, due to their lack of merits, failed to see the trees with boundless light as tall as four million miles, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第二十九得勝辯才願：設我得佛，國中菩薩若受讀經法，諷誦持說而不得辯才智慧者，不取正覺。
The Twenty-ninth Vow: All will be eloquent. If I attained Buddhahood, and the Bodhisattvas in my realm accepted and read sutras and dharma, and kept reciting or talking about them, but still failed to gain eloquence and wisdom, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第三十無邊辯才願：設我得佛，國中菩薩智慧辯才若可限量者，不取正覺。
The Thirtieth Vow: All will gain boundless eloquence. If I attained Buddhahood, and the eloquence of the Bodhisattvas in my realm was limited, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第三十一照徹諸剎願：設我得佛，國土清淨，皆悉照見十方一切無量無數不可思議諸佛世界，猶如明鏡覩其面像。若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Thirty-first Vow: All the lands will be illuminated. If I attained Buddhahood, my realm would be pure and the numerous incredible Buddha lands would be illuminated and seen like a clear mirror showing the reflection. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第三十二妙香普熏願：設我得佛，自地以上至於虛空，宮殿、樓觀、池流、華樹，國土所有一切萬物，皆以無量雜寶百千種香而共合成，嚴飾奇妙超諸人天，其香普薰十方世界，菩薩聞者皆修佛行。若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Thirty-second Vow: The wondrous incense will fumigate universally. If I attained Buddhahood, the lands, the void, the palaces, the buildings, the ponds, the trees and everything in my realm would be composed with countless treasures and hundreds of kinds of incense. The wondrous and solemn adornments would surpass humans and heavenly beings. The incense would fumigate universally in the Ten Directions. The Bodhisattvas that smelled it would cultivate the Buddha path. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第三十三觸光安樂願：設我得佛，十方無量不可思議諸佛世界眾生之類，蒙我光明觸其體者，身心柔軟超過人天。若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Thirty-third Vow: All will be peaceful and happy when touching the light. If I attained Buddhahood, the sentient beings in the boundless incredible Buddha lands in the Ten Directions were exposed to my light and became soft physically and mentally and surpassed the humans and heavenly beings. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第三十四得陀羅尼願：設我得佛，十方無量不可思議諸佛世界眾生之類，聞我名字不得菩薩無生法忍、諸深總持者，不取正覺。
The Thirty-fourth Vow: All will gain dharani. If I attained Buddhahood, the sentient beings in the boundless incredible Buddha lands in the Ten Directions heard my name but could not gain Bodhisattva tolerance and abide by all deep dharma, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第三十五聞名轉男願：設我得佛，十方無量不可思議諸佛世界，其有女人聞我名字，歡喜信樂，發菩提心，厭惡女身，壽終之後復為女像者，不取正覺。
The Thirty-fifth Vow: All women will be reborn to be men after they hear my name. If I attained Buddhahood, the women in the boundless incredible Buddha lands in the Ten Directions heard my name, became pleased and convinced, and made up a Bodhi mind. If such women who were tired of having a woman’s body got reborn with a woman’s form again after they finished the present life, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第三十六修梵淨行願：設我得佛，十方無量不可思議諸佛世界，諸菩薩眾聞我名字，壽終之後常修梵行至成佛道。若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Thirty-sixth Vow: All will cultivate the pure acts. If I attained Buddhahood, the Bodhisattvas in the boundless incredible Buddha lands in the Ten Directions heard my name and, after finishing the present life, constantly cultivated the pure acts until they attained Buddhahood. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第三十七人天禮敬願：設我得佛，十方無量不可思議諸佛世界，諸天人民聞我名字，五體投地稽首作禮，歡喜信樂修菩薩行，諸天世人莫不致敬。若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Thirty-seventh Vow: All beings will bow to me. If I attained Buddhahood, the beings in the boundless incredible Buddha lands in the Ten Directions heard my name, bowed to me, and cultivated the Bodhisattva acts with pleasure, and were respected by the beings in all realms. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第三十八妙衣在體願：設我得佛，國中人天欲得衣服隨念即至，如佛所讚應法妙服自然在身；若有裁縫、染治、浣濯者，不取正覺。
The Thirty-eighth Vow:
If I attained Buddhahood, the beings in my realm gave a thought and the clothing they needed would appear. As what the Buddhas praised, the wondrous clothing would naturally be on the body. If the clothing needs sewing, dyeing or washing, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第三十九樂如漏盡願：設我得佛，國中人天所受快樂不如漏盡比丘者，不取正覺。
The Thirty-ninth Vow: All will be happy as their afflictions end. If I attained Buddhahood, and the beings in my realm were not as happy as the bhiksus who had severed afflictions, I would not attain Samya-sambodhi.

第四十樹現諸剎願：設我得佛，國中菩薩隨意欲見十方無量嚴淨佛土，應時如願，於寶樹中皆悉照見，猶如明鏡覩其面像。若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Fortieth Vow: Trees will appear in all lands. If I attained Buddhahood, and the Bodhisattvas in my realm wanted to see the boundless solemn pure Buddha lands at will, then their wish would be granted and they would see all the treasure trees like a clear mirror showing its reflection. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第四十一諸根無缺願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾聞我名字，至於得佛，諸根缺陋不具足者，不取正覺。
The Forty-first Vow: The Six Consciousnesses will not be incomplete. If I attained Buddhahood, and the Bodhisattvas in other lands heard my name and then even attained Buddhahood, but their consciousnesses were incomplete or ugly, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第四十二得淨禪定願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾聞我名字，皆悉逮得清淨解脫三昧，住是三昧一發意頃，供養無量不可思議諸佛世尊而不失定意。若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Forty-second Vow: All will gain pure stability. If I attained Buddhahood, the Bodhisattvas in other lands heard my name and all gained the pure liberation Samadhi. With a flash of thought there, they would make offerings to the countless incredible Buddhas and kept their intention. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第四十三聞名富貴願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾聞我名字，壽終之後生尊貴家。若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Forty-third Vow: Those who hear my name will be born into rich and noble families. If I attained Buddhahood, the Bodhisattvas in other lands who heard my name would be born into noble families after they finished the present life. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第四十四增上善根願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾聞我名字，歡喜踊躍，修菩薩行，具足德本。若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Forty-fourth Vow:
If I attained Buddhahood, the Bodhisattvas in other lands heard my name and became happy and enthusiastic. They would cultivate the Bodhisattva acts and became replete with virtues. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第四十五得三摩地願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾聞我名字，皆悉逮得普等三昧，住是三昧至於成佛，常見無量不可思議一切如來；若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Forty-fifth Vow: All will gain Samadhi. If I attained Buddhahood, the Bodhisattvas in other lands who heard my name would all gain universally equal Samadhi and abide by it until they attained Buddhahood and would see countless incredible Tathagatas. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第四十六隨願聞法願：設我得佛，國中菩薩隨其志願，所欲聞法自然得聞。若不爾者，不取正覺。
The Forty-sixth Vow: All will hear Dharma as they wish. If I attained Buddhahood, the Bodhisattvas in my realm would be able to hear Dharma as they wish. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第四十七聞名不退願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾聞我名字，不即得至不退轉者，不取正覺。
The Forty-seventh Vow: Those who hear my name will not withdraw. If I attained Buddhahood, the Bodhisattvas in other lands who heard my name would not withdraw. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.

第四十八聞名得忍願：設我得佛，他方國土諸菩薩眾聞我名字，不即得至第一、第二、第三法忍，於諸佛法不能即得不退轉者，不取正覺。
The Forty-eighth Vow: Those who hear my name will gain dharma tolerance. If I attained Buddhahood, the Bodhisattvas in other lands who heard my name would immediately gain the first, second, and third dharma tolerance and would not withdraw from the Buddhist Dharma. If not so, I would not attain Samyak-sambodhi.
